puzzle

cow - 3
cat - 4
duck - 5
pig- ?

Anecdotally, this question was taken from a 1st grade book and kids usually come up with an answer within seconds. It took 15 minutes for 3 physics PhD students (including me) to crack this. Then I brought this up in my research group and a bunch of postdocs and a couple of professors couldn't come up with an answer for a couple of hours before finally accepting defeat. Apparently, this question gets harder with age (or education?).

I've added the correct answer as a comment.

  1. Correct answer is 4. Kids don't know much about stuff, but sounds animals make is one of the first things they learn. So, this is the number of letters in sounds: cow - moo (3), cat - meow (4), duck - quack (5), pig - oink (4). Deep Seth got it right first :)
